Tradie Tax Q&A

Can I claim my phone and internet for work?

Yes, but only the work-use portion, and not again if those costs are already covered by the home office fixed-rate method.

Last updated: 7 July 2026. General information for Australian tradies. Not personal tax advice.

What counts as work use

Calling clients, suppliers, supervisors, using job apps, emailing plans, invoicing, maps between sites, and work rostering can support a claim.

How to estimate work percentage

A representative four-week diary can help estimate work use. Keep phone bills and notes explaining the calculation.

Avoid double counting

If using the home office fixed rate for home admin hours, phone and internet running costs are already included for those hours.

Where to enter it in TradieCalc

Enter work-use phone and internet only if you are using actual costs rather than double counting fixed-rate home office running costs.
