Can I claim tools under $300 straight away?
Generally yes, if each tool is used for work, costs $300 or less, and you were not reimbursed.

Small tools that commonly qualify
Common examples include hand tools, drill bits, tool belts, tape measures, levels, gloves, safety glasses, and other individual items used for work.
When $300 is not the right shortcut
If a purchase is a set that works together as one item, or the item costs more than $300, depreciation may apply. Expensive power tools, laptops, and equipment should be entered in depreciation rather than small tools.
Records to keep
Keep receipts where possible. If the item is small, also keep a simple list showing date, supplier, item, cost, and work use.
Where to enter it in TradieCalc
Enter small tools in Tools & PPE; enter higher-cost tools in Asset Depreciation.
