Tradie Tax Q&A

What happens if I overclaim tax deductions?

If a deduction is overclaimed, the ATO may amend the return, reduce the claim, charge extra tax and interest, and penalties can apply in more serious cases.

If it was a mistake

If you notice a mistake, you can amend the return. Acting early and keeping a clear explanation is better than waiting for a review.

Interest and penalties

If tax was underpaid, shortfall interest can apply. Penalties depend on behaviour, such as whether reasonable care was taken.

How to avoid overclaiming

Do not guess large claims, do not claim reimbursed expenses, and do not claim private costs as work costs.
