Tradie Tax Q&A

What is the maximum amount a tradie can claim?

There is no single maximum for every tradie. The limit is whether the expense is deductible, work-related, correctly apportioned and supported by records.

No universal maximum

A first-year apprentice and an ABN contractor buying materials will have very different claims. The ATO looks at the facts, not a fixed tradie maximum.

Where caps do exist

The cents-per-km car method has a kilometre cap. Small tool claims and receipt rules have thresholds. Home office fixed rate depends on recorded hours.

What makes a large claim safer

Large deductions need strong evidence: receipts, logbooks, invoices, work-use calculations and a clear link to earning income.
